Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple History

The reason behind the Meenakshi Amman Temple history of Madurai was very interesting and meaningful. Madurai was a 2500 years back history and the name Madurai derived from the word Madura alias Methora in the ancient records. Based on the records Madurai and Meenakshi Amman Temple was created and built under the period of King Kulasekara Pandiyan who was a famous king in the Pandiyas hierarchy. There are two incidents mainly behind the formation of Madurai and the Temple. One is the king kulasekara pandiyan was a big fan of Lord Shiva and he did daily pooja’s to Lord Siva at every day morning. One day in his dream Lord Siva appeared and told to construct a new temple on the east side of current living location. Next day morning pandiyan asked his ministers to east side for the review and want to know what is there at east location. All are said in that particular area there is a big forest in acres along with banks of river. In the forest called kadambavanam due to a lot of kadamba trees mostly covered in the forest.

The second incident was one rishi who lived in the forest saw a formed suyambu lingam. That place looks divine and something felt by the rishi named dhananjaya. In some another record says dhananjaya was a woodcutter but there is no strong records about him. Immediately rishi conveyed this information to the king directly and already the king thought about the dream. Simultaneously both incidents were gave more pressure to the king and the kind decided to call the asthana jothidar regarding this. Jothidar saw the prasannam and told to remove the entire forest and must build the Big Lord Shiva temple.

The king was planned with all the saba members and started the work on one Ammavasai. Kulasekara Pandiyan cleans the forest and built a temple around the Lingam. A small town was rapidly planned with the temple as its centre. On the day the city was to be named, Lord Shiva is said to have appeared and drops of nectar from his hair fell on the town. So, the place was named Madurai derived from the name Mathuram meaning "sweetness" in Tamil. After the work starts the small town was shined with beauty and the nearby river named Vagai. All the people went that place and worship the God while construction is going even. King much happy for that movement and announced Madura will be a new capital of the Pandiyas rule.
